FINALIST #4 NJAMES:
Pouted lips as gothic? You have come this far in the competition but the first exercise seems to have escaped you completely -- character/persona/image. If this is the first page of a "high fashion" magazine, I will not take a second look to consider buying it.
You could have worn some footwear, didn't open your fly and the book you are holding is unnecessary (if it was the bible then it could have worked if the word bible is visible). The eye make-up is goth. You could have used black lipstick too. Work it out in the next round and be much more striking.
mmmmm
I believe this is your best facial expression in this whole competition, focused and determined. I just don't get the goth except for the eye make-up and religious feel except for the necklace and I guess the Bible you are carrying. The angle of the shot made you look smaller. Don't be afraid to experiment.
Just another pose. An ordinary G4M pose. Uninteresting because it is too moderate. The sex innuendo is evident with your fly open. The black and white motif is moderate and it did not sizzle. Am I to wait for you to get bare or will I start to look for the goth projection? You must have misunderstood the theme.
It would have been alright if you didn't open the pants and shown your underwear. What could have worked is to have a very striking belt buckle that would be reminiscent of the goth symbolism. Also, some awesome knee-length boots would have worked. As a first page for a fashion spread, hmmm … the choice of font looks ok but if i will be the editor of this magazine, i will just place this picture in the 4th page of a 6-page fashion spread.
FINALIST #6 KHALEL:
The searing stare, the punched left hand, the vines hanging all over -- these are some of the elements that made the photograph eerie. I also like the way the model's skin was bleached in such a way that the light coming from anywhere bounces off. The model's sense of fashion is commendable.
You could have just stood up to make the imagery more commanding and authoritative since the title is a little bit mixing with the ensemble you are wearing. Overall, it is quite appealing.
mmmmm
Your layout looks more of a book cover rather than a magazine cover. I love that you incorporated red to give life and vibrance. I also appreciate the black bird as an added touch and your stigmata. I just wished you chose a closer shot and highlight yourself more rather than the background and effects.
A msytifying and entrancing effect. You are Death personified! You astonished me with the play of colors. Goth can be exciting and yours is a perfect contrast play of colors. Not so morbid but extremely enticing. You are calm, yet reassuring that you will be one everyone's step till they die. Kudos to your Production Team. I will say this unabashedly - You got this round, for me.
Hmmm, nice overall photo as the first page for a fashion spread. Cohesive elements. Nice projection. My only problem is that the letter "G" in the word GOTH is somehow blocking your footwear that it could have been better if it was made a little smaller in order for what you are wearing to really be seen. Good production team.
FINALIST #8 MAKI:
Apart from the costume and make up well belabored, the handling of this photo is facile. If you were a vampire cajoling with the cross, there is nothing "gothic" with the attempt. If you were a woman nailed on the cross, where is the pain and the blood and everything else not sugar and spice?
You could have chosen a different location or background specially if you were to have a shoot with another finalist. It would have been striking though if you have a graphic artist to change the color of the stained glass into red, had excessive silver accessories and changed your footwear into high-heeled boots for a more fashionable ensemble. Be more daring in your poses and styling. It still lacks the OOMPH factor.
mmmmm
I expect a stronger pose from you because of your previous performances 'coz you lacked luster here. The pose is ordinary and not strong enough to evoke the feeling of goth. The setting is too raw and it would have helped if you dressed it up a bit. It looks unaccessorized like your outfit.
I am loss for words. Everything I see is wrong. I don’t like the dress. I don’t even like the shoes. I don't even like the stockings. All I can see is an overt statement of what a goth should not be. Worst, I am not impressed by your feminine rendition. I am seeing a damsel in distress.
Good to see your hair done differently. Your long boots could have worked here. You could have done an Angelina Jolie styling when she was on her Goth-look days. Try giving an edge to your poses. Don't be afraid to experiment. You lacked the required accessories. This will not pass for a first page of a fashion spread. Commendable effort but it's not enough to give me a WOW effect. This is a weak entry.
FINALIST #9 CJ:
This photo sends me back to other magazine covers I have seen before during the Lenten Season. But the cross that the model carries on his shoulder here seems to be so light that his muscles are not strained at all by the weight. If you were an incarnation of Jesus Christ carrying the cross, the silver necklace is not necessary. If you were an incarnation of someone else, what is the silver crown of thorns for? In short, this photo is overdone for the first page of a high-fashion magazine.
Save for the overall effect of the lay-out and the graphics as well as the saintly halo which is minimalism in its subtlety, this entry would be better had you changed your fashion accessory into something else. If I were to do this, I could have let you wore a sleeveless version of the robe of the nazarene made in silver, made the cross into red and worn a sword pendant instead.
mmmmmmmmmm
You forgot that this should be a magazine cover and not an art piece. Your execution is too theatrical wherein you forgot to make it fashionable. There is a thin line from being creative and commiting sacrilege. I hope to see a more fashionable you the next round.
A religious portrayal bordering on heresy. The body definition is quite distracting. But the artistic portrayal is strong and defined. There is something amiss in your facial projection. It is just lame. But, your overall entry is drowning the audience with your presence. But not enough for me to be impressed.
Striking first page, kudos to your production team. Love the incorporation of the halo which is quite reminiscent of the Niccolo Cosme /Dennis Celestial shot for Imagine Magazine. It could have been better though if your face is not too tilted or you could have just looked straight to the camera for a more "IN YOUR FACE" stare in order to elicit an affectionate response. What could have worked though as an accessory instead of the CROSS pendant which is quite redundant with the cross you are carrying is a bleeding heart pendant usually found in Virgin Mary images.
