Round 5 : "The Printed Patterns Canvas" Judges Critiques

Here are the Judges Critiques for the Round 5 Entries:

FINALIST # 1 ONI

HIGHS: Clean concept yet graphically arresting. Good work !

LOWS: Non-adherence to the theme – It should be painted clothing style not painted body art. The bigger image can actually stand alone to be more effective.

I love the artwork.

This is your best performance in this competition. You really stepped up and showed us your range.
You nailed the concept and your pose and facial expression are fierce.

Surprisingly I liked the simplicity. I like the sleek figure and the white background. I like the prints. Some would find it dull, but I find it extraordinarily pleasing to the eyes. You are back on track and you are improving.

Except for the non-adherence of making a clothing material out of the body paint, your lay-out and over-all look is very much magazine material. It would have been perfect had you just left your hands, face and feet untouched by the body paint and just changed the expression of your face in your standing image, I could have given you the highest score for this round. The bigger image can actually stand alone and looks great for a magazine cover. But don't remain the silent theme deviator, some judges might just pull the plug out from you. Needless to say, you are improving on your quest to be on top, even if you kept on with your rebellious ways.

FINALIST #4 NJAMES

HIGHS: Good concept deviating from the normally tested style. Entry with a message.

LOWS: One image is enough to convey the message. Too much elements in your entry. Remember, simplicity yet having a good pose will be enough to nail it.

mmmm… very nice … so colorful

I love the use of colors and the message you are trying to impart w/ the body paint but it was not
carried up to your facial expression and pose. You highlighted your eyes w/ a white paint and it shifted our focus on your dead expression.

Color is what I find in this cartoonesque entry. You are outstanding in projection. You deviated from the usual fare of how models should look like.

Interesting rainbow campaign though it could have been better if you opted to take that shot in a much plain background (like white or light gray) in order for you to stand out even without that artwork type of poster placed in the window. That body artwork reminds me though of the way some Campus Protesters at the UP campus or even during the Oblation Run try to send their complaints through visual nudity and colorful body art. Try to minimize the elements in your shot unless needed, for you to really stand out. Also, work on your facial and body expressions.

FINALIST # 5 CHRIS

HIGHS: Hmmm… adherence to the theme.

LOWS: Awkward pose and almost same facial expression. Can’t really get your concept, having mixed feelings about it. A darker color on your pants (if there is any) would have been better.

mmmm you left your shirt on …. Hehehe

The body paint looks half-baked and because of that it looked like a swimsuit w/c was complimented by the bench. I thought that this was your element because of your past pictorials but it was not I expected. The focus of the eyes is also far from the lenses and you look uneasy.

Wow! Impressive. Specially the shadow. The background. The drama. You have submitted a complete show. I am a little bit awry on the eyes. Why does it have to look so angry? Nonetheless, an outstanding entry.

Seems like you lost your pants or your concept is sunbathing with your swimsuit on. Unless of course your concept is that of a circus clown, then your entry lacks the needed headdress or other props. Also, try to work on your facial expression…it looks like you are angry with your photographer and your pose is so tense that your arms are too much flexed. Choice of pattern and color is not really so pleasing. Try again on the next round.

FINALIST #6 KHALEL

HIGHS: Good pose.

LOWS: Non-adherence to the theme in terms of printed patterns on your painted clothing. Almost same facial expression. Too dark background with your dark clothing. Poor editing of background.

effort ehehehehe =)

The picture looks poorly edited because your head looks pasted on the body. The expression is verging on trying to be fierce or trying to scare us. This also reminds me of the past picture where you resembled our Nat'l Hero but in a more modern outfit. I cannot see your progression.

Unfortunately, this comes a little bit short. I like the black concept. I like your pose. But there is something amiss on how your face was projected. It is gravitating towards the grotesque.

Effort goes to you for doing it the old-fashioned way but your face looks a bit malnourished here. It would have been great if your background was changed into an all silver glitzy look, in that way, you could have shined with your formal body painted wear. The real problem though at this time is that you didn’t even had any patterns at all in your painted clothing.

FINALIST #8 MAKI

HIGHS: Nice facial and body expression. Nice composition. Keep working it up !!!

LOWS: You should have worn a printed upper clothing (painted, of course) even if it’s very minimal to be able to nail this round.

mmmm Christian Dior Hosiery? I love the way he did it this time.

My regular critique for you is to find a good make-up and hairstylist to fix you. You always look a bit messy and not that fashionable eventhough you know how to pose and project. You should've covered your body w/ paint because it is not your strength. I want to see a cleaner look next time.

hmmm. Something tells me that I must like your entry. But it is too soft. I like the way you posed. I like the curvy depiction. But it is too sexy for comfort. But you are all made up and to me, this is entirely safe.

How I love the way you exuded sexiness. Even though you didn't actually wore the whole clothing ensemble, it still worked well as a whole. Keep it up and make sure you change your image every round for us to see your range of emotions and modeling expressions. It could have worked much better though had you worn a somehow transparent but printed top. Good enough to see this on a magazine ad for hosiery or perfume.

FINALIST #9 CJ

HIGHS: Great concept. Loved it! You nailed it right in a different way.

LOWS: A different facial expression could have really worked with the overall concept.

wow… you’re my winner this time.

I believe this is the cutest and smartest execution in this round. I love that there is a story behind the body paint which blends into the location and props. You could have won this challenge if you thought of your expression.

This is too much realistic for comfort. I will credit you for effort. For the realism. But compared among the other entries, this falls short of expectation. Again, I like the boyish stand.

Nicely done concept and quite different than what I expected. Except for the pouting of the lips, everything looks good - the choice of colors for the outfit and the setting. Perfect for a magazine spread on fitness. Keep it up.
